Hurricane Irene

Well, it’s official folks. A very powerful hurricane is on its way. Her name – Irene. Now, I know there have been countless newscasts already informing you how to stay safe during the storm – stocking up on food, water, batteries; moving to a room in your house without windows; etc. – but do you know how to keep your pool safe from Irene’s wrath as well? Here are some tips on how to keep your pool from getting damaged by this very powerful storm:

1. Lower the water level in your pool. You should lower it according the predicted amount of rainfall. You can do this by either running your filter on its WASTE setting or by pumping the water out with an independent pump. This will prevent your pool from overflowing which could cause damage to your liner if the water and dirt get between the liner and pool wall.

2. Shut off and unplug all pool equipment. This should be done so your pool is not effected by any power surges that may occur in the case of a power outage.

3. Store or secure all yard furniture. Any loose objects that are in your backyard and close to your pool can turn into hazards for your pool’s liner during heavy winds. Any objects – such as patio furniture, umbrellas, etc. – should be stored in a shed or tied down to prevent them from blowing into the pool and puncturing the liner.

Just following those three simple steps will give you peace of mind that you’ve done what you can for your pool during what is shaping up to be one of the most dangerous hurricanes in New York’s history. And from all of us at Paul Romanelli and Son Pool Service, we hope you are well prepared for the storm and that you and your family stay as safe as possible.
